I am currently an undergraduate studying Neuroscience at Washington University in St. Louis. Formally, I study Psychopathology and Neurogenetics at the BRAIN Lab under Dr. Ryan Bogdan. Informally, I study up on all aspects of consciousness, from the biological to the philosophical.
It is my hope, and belief, that we will one day come to understand a complete theory of consciousness, in whatever form that may require. The title of this blog, reluctantDualist, illustrates my mixed feelings on the state of the field (if there can be said to be one) at the present time. Intuitively, I cling to fragments of both materialist and dualist ideas, and I am currently trying to find a way to reconcile these divergent views, if only in my own head. The view that I agree with the most, currently, could be described as a kind of neutral monism.
The point of this blog is, beyond all else, to give myself space to express my own thoughts and reflections as I trudge through the mountain of literature, theoretical and empirical, that has accumulated over the centuries. I hope that my ramblings may be of some use to others interested in this fascinating enterprise in human understanding, and please, comment if you have the desire—I’m always open to feedback, constructive or otherwise!
And while you’re here, check out my girlfriend’s blog on knitting!
